Quelques semaines auparavant, ils ont accompagné le groupe du Collège Jean-Eudes de Montréal participant à l’Expérience Dominicaine. Leur vidéo, en plus d’expliquer l’expérience vécue par le groupe de jeunes, donne la parole à Francisco, un itinérant dominicain qui livre ses pensées sur le bonheur humain. Le Souverain pontife s'est exprimé devant un parterre soigneusement choisi d'intellectuels et de personnalités, ce vendredi soir, au Collège des Bernardin. Sous les voûtes parfaitement restaurées du magnifique Collège des Bernardins, à deux pas de Notre-Dame de Paris, le contraste était saisissant. D'un côté, les plus hautes personnalités du monde de la culture, des sciences et des médias, Valery Giscard d'Estaing et Jacques Chirac (accompagné de son épouse), environnés d'un essaim de curieux venus au spectacle. De l'autre, le pape Benoît XVI, souriant et escorté de cardinaux, venu délivrer un message d'une haute teneur intellectuelle, qui a laissé la noble assistance bouche-bée. S'exprimant dans un français parfait, le Saint père n'a pas mâché ses mots pour rappeler la valeur unique de l'héritage culturel légué par le monachisme français. Non pour célébrer la gloire de la vie monastique, style de vie aujourd'hui englouti, mais pour souligner la modernité de leur quête. La quête de la parole, c'est à dire l'interprétation des textes, leur transfomation en actes de vie. Exercice peu évident à priori. Pourtant, pendant 45 minutes, l'auditeur attentif a assisté à une véritable suite du fameux discours de Ratisbonne, qui, on s'en souvient, fit scandale auprès des musulmans et obligea le pape à se rendre en grandes pompes à Istanbul pour corriger le tir. Cette fois, il n'y aura rien à corriger. Benoît XVI a travaillé pendant de longues heures son discours, écrit d'abord en allemand et retouché de nombreuses fois. Economie de mots, précision extrême, arguments frappants, de quoi séduire les plus sceptiques - et il y en avait. Le but? Démontrer que "la nouveauté de la foi chrétinne n'est pas dans une pensée. Elle est dans un fait: Dieu s'est montré". En se montrant, il a laissé le Logos, la Parole, ce principe d'esprit à la base de notre civilisation. Or la Parole s'oppose à la lettre. "La lettre tue", a écrit l'apôtre Paul. "De fait, a déclaré le pape, les chrétiens de l'Eglise naissante ne considéraient pas leur annonce missionnaire comme une propagande... L'universalité de la raison consituaient pour eux la motivation et, à la fois, le devoir de l'annonce". Autrement dit, le pape a prononcé un vibrant plaidoyer pour une correction de la foi par la raison et a condamné tous les fondamentalismes qui s'appuient sur "la lettre" en oubliant l'esprit. Qui visait donc Benoît XVI? Les musulmans, présents au premier rang devant lui, et qu'il est allé saluer chaleureusement dès la fin de son allocution? Assurément pas, ou pas directement. Le pape visait en fait le fondamentalisme américain, cette tendance en pleine expansion qui s'appuie sur des citations de l'Evangile en excluant toute forme d'interprétation et qui, de ce fait enlève à l'Eglise sa fonction.
