Les personnages, les Transformers, sont des robots extraterrestres provenant de la planète Cybertron qui, pour des raisons de camouflage, ont développé la faculté de « transformer » leur apparence pour devenir des machines faisant partie de l’environnement où ils se trouvent. Sur Terre, ils se transforment surtout en véhicules, mais aussi en baladeur, en fusils, etc. Ces robots ont été inspirés des jouets Diaclone (Japon) de 1980, des robots avec la faculté de se transformer en objets inanimés qui devinrent par la suite des robots se transformant en véhicules. En 1984, Hasbro (États-unis) s'est associée à Takara (Japon) pour former la série The Transformers des Jouets Transformers qui donnèrent naissance à une série de comic books de Marvel et surtout à la série télévisée du même nom.
