Marie Fredriksson et Per Gessle se sont rencontrés pour la première fois vers la fin des années 70. Ils partageaient la même salle de répetition avec leurs groupes respectifs: MaMa's Barn (Marie) et Gyllene Tider (Per). Les premiers contacts n'ont pas mené à grand chose, et pourtant ils devinrent amis, et se voyaient souvent, rêvant d'une carrière internationale... C'est en 1986, qu'ils ont décidé, comme projet, de former le duo Roxette (le nom vient d'une chanson de Dr Feelgood). Leur premier 45t, "Neverending Love", ainsi que leur premier album "Pearls of Passion" devinrent des succès en Suède, mais rien ne se passa à l'étranger. Jusqu'au moment où un étudiant Américain, en séjour en Suède, rapporta l'album chez lui dans le Minneapolis et le donna à sa station de radio. L'animateur apprécia à tel point l'album et particulièrement la chanson "The Look" qu'il en fit des copies et les envoya à ses collègues dans d'autres stations. Et c'est ainsi que commença une des plus belles histoires de la pop musique. La chanson entra dans les charts, sans même être sortie en tant que 45t. Neuf semaines plus tard, elle était numéro 1 aux Etats-Unis (1989) !!! L'album "Look Sharp" se vendit à plus de 8 millions d'exemplaire. Les autres extraits connurent une succès similaire: "Listen to your heart", numéro 1; "Dangerous", numéro 2... En 1990, ils furent sollicités pour composer une chanson pour le film Pretty Woman, n'ayant pas le temps, en raison de l'enregistrement de leur nouvel album, ils donnèrent une ancienne chanson, sortie à Noël 87, "It must have been love", qui, après avoir été re-écrite, devint leur troisième numéro 1 aux Etats-Unis. En 1991, leur troisième album, "Joyride", sort ; le premier extrait sera aussi numéro 1, leur quatrième ! Avec cet album, ils partent en tournée mondiale, le Joyride World Tour, et les ventes dépasseront les 10 millions d'exemplaires ! En 1992, "Tourism", un album concept, sort. Il contient des chansons enregistrées en public, dans des chambres d'hôtels ou en studio. "How do you do", le premier extrait est un nouveau succès. Suivi de "Almost Unreal" (apparaît sur le bande originale du film Super Mario Bros, 1993; le film est un échec, mais la chanson un hit). La même année, ils jouent un concert acoustique, pour l'émission Unplugged de MTV, ce qui prouva à tous ceux qui n'en était pas encore convaincus que Per, Marie et les autres membres du groupe sont de vrais musiciens ! En 1994, le tant attendu album de studio "Crash! Boom! Bang!" est mis en vente, et sera suivi du Crash! Boom! Bang! World-Tour, avec des concerts historiques comme à Pékin ou Moscou... Et pour la plus grande joie de leurs fans, ils ont sorti un album contenant tous leurs plus grands succès en 1995, "Don't bore us - get to the chorus!"... mais ils auraient très bien pu sortir un double album, que ça ne m'aurait pas dérangé... Ils ont beaucoup plus que 18 hits... Le 27 Octobre 1997, ils ont enfin republié leur premier album, "Pearls of Passion". Cette nouvelle édition contient en bonus des remix et autres demos. 1999 est l'année de Roxette ! "Have A Nice Day", le nouvel album studio est enfin dans les bacs (bientôt en France, on espère!). C'est une vrai perle, qui rassemble tout ce qui se fait de mieux actuellement, et pourtant la griffe de Per et de Marie est bien présente. Ils nous ont une fois de plus offert un chef d'oeuvre ! En 2001, c'est Room Service qui sort dans les bacs. Un nouvel album avec lequel les deux Suédois partiront en tournée. L'année suivante, ils publient un best of en deux parties, The Ballad HIts et The Pop Hits. Fin 2002, ils devaient partir en tournée avec l'orchestre symphonique de The Night of the Proms, mais Marie est tombée malade et ce projet est tombé à l'eau. Privé de sa partenaire, Per sort un nouvel album en suédois début 2003 (Mazarin), qui fait un malheur en Suède et c'est en été qu'il part en tournée... Pour 2004, c'est avec son groupe Gyllene Tider qu'il remet ça ! Un nouvel album, Finn Fem Fell et une tournée. Marie prévoit de sortir un album solo en anglais, The Change.. Fin 2005, nouvelle surprise de la part de Per qui prépare un album en anglais, sous le nom de Son of a Plumber. La presse et le public réservent un très bon accueil au double CD et Per part en tournée promo. Arrive enfin 2006, l'année de 20 ans de Roxette et là c'est Marie qui surprend tout le monde avec la sortie d'un album de reprises (en suédois), Min Bäste Vän. ( moins )
