En 1996, des investigateurs du National Labor Committee ont découvert que des adolescentes fabriquaient des vêtements pour la gamme de Kathie Lee Gifford, l'actrice, la chanteuse, et la coanimatrice de l'émission talk-show Live! With Regis and Kathie Lee. Les vêtements, produites à l'usine Global Fashion en Honduras, étaient dites de venir d'un atelier clandestin dans lequel des filles de 13 à 15 ans travaillaient jusqu'à 75 heures par semaine pour environ 0,31$ par heure. Les magasins Wal-Mart vendaient la gamme Kathie Lee, en au mois de mai 1996, après une foule de publicité négative pour Wal-Mart et Gifford, elle annonça qu'elle établirait un programme de surveillance pour toutes les usines fabriquant ses vêtements, y compris celui à New York, non loin d'où son émission était produite.
