En 1976, l'album Oxygene marque l'histoire de la reconnaissance de la musique électronique et des synthétiseurs par le grand public. La voie avait déjà été tracée par des productions comme la musique du film Orange mécanique (1972) par Walter Carlos, Tubular bells (1973) de Mike Oldfield, Phaedra par Tangerine Dream, Albedo 0.39 (1976) de Vangelis ou les recherches de Brian Eno, mais Jean Michel Jarre obtient le succès en créant une œuvre électronique d'un accès facile, avec des mélodies simples, systématisant l'usage des synthétiseurs, tranchant avec les musiques industrielles de l'époque comme celle de Kraftwerk (qui véhiculaient souvent, de manière implicite ou non, une réflexion mêlant inquiétude et fascination face à une technologie déshumanisante). Son succès populaire est indéniable, mais il est dénigré par les amateurs plus pointus de musique techno qui le classent parfois comme artiste de variétés. ( moins )
